Kiwi County Fair

Today we went to the Malvern A&P Show in the nearby berg of Sheffield. “A “stands for agriculture and “P” stands for pastoral (though they call their pastures paddocks). We visited friends who were manning the Lion’s Club sandwich tent at this area event which mirrors our county fairs in the Midwest. We bumped into Dianne’s tennis partner, Glenys, who was beeming with her first place award for flower arranging and the news of the recent birth of her first grandchild, Marlow. With all these “firsts”,she appropriatey appears in the first picture below. The fair concluded with a competion of sheep shearing with the best contestants finishing in less than 1 minute as this guy did in picture #2.

What fun! It reminds me so much of my first County Fair experience. It was in Audubon, Iowa in 1985. The fair organizers asked me to come in from Newton and serve as a “celebrity” judge. Who could pass that up? I ended up helping to crown “Princess Pigtail” and “Master Tailcurler.” A unique experience for a city boy!
