HOKITIKA

Our favorite town on the west coast is Hokitika. It is a bright, energetic place with artist galleries and an annual Wild Food festival where people eat crazy things like beetles and grubs. It just happened to be held the day of our visit. We skipped that event but saw many costumed characters at our restaurant who filtered in that evening while we enjoyed supper (or “tea” as it is called in New Zealand.). Lamb shank was my mildly weird food that night and it was delightful. Following that we went to their beach on the Tasman Sea where I sat in a concrete easy chair sculpture near the Hokitika sign made of driftwood. Dianne and I were the “I’s” of Hokitika that night as you see in the second picture below.
