South Island Day ONE

We started out on our ambitious plan to traverse the sites south of Darfield and visited the Moreaki Boulders on the eastern shore. These 50 spherical rocks are the “Stonehenge of New Zealand” and can be 2 meters in diameter. and are concretions 60,000,000 years old.

Later that day we accessed Tunnel Beach near Dunedin. The next photo shows the steep tunnel carved out of solid rock with Dianne at the top and her reflection in green near the bottom. We picked a good time to visit as at high tide this tunnel fills with water making it impassable. The second picture shows most of the tiny beach beyond the tunnel.

To complete the first day, we went to Nugget Point Lighthouse, as shown in the folllowing pictures, and stayed in an Airbnb that night.

One response to “South Island Day ONE”

  1. What an incredible adventure for you, Dianne and your family! You guys have really been taking advantage of every opportunity to explore this new world. I remember when you were first approaching the island from the pane, you said it felt like you were landing on another planet. Maybe you were right!?!
