Our “fish whisperer” son, Brian

After 2 days on the north island we came to our home of 6 months-Darfield which is inland on the south island. I set up a chance for Brian to fly fish for trout at a spot where my local friend, Hamish previously showed me rising fish. I couldn’t catch any but thought Brian might like a chance at doing it . Common wisdom here says that the only way to catch a trout is to see it in the the gin clear waters and cast carefully in front of it being extremely careful not to spook it. These fish are quite difficult to see so you generally hire a guide who spots the fish and puts you in position to catch it. Not for Brian-he employed the techniques he would use in Iowa fishing blindly in promising looking river flow and caught a medium sized brown trout within 45 minutes. I have tried fishing this and similiar spots on 8 occasions and have not had a bite myself. Brian has the knack and it certainly isn’t passed down from me.
